I was asked by Mr. Pieter Cranenbroek (Senior New Editor at LinkedIn News) to provide my opinion on the state of EU’s single market. From reading the inputs in “How to stop worrying and love the Single Market” I understood a political perspective is missing among the rest of the very interesting business, marketing, economic insights. Here is my response also to be found in the comments section of Shifting Perspectives newsletter.
“Dear Pieter, thank you for contacting me and for providing this space to comment on EU’s single market. I agree with most points of the newsletter and I truly understand the comments reflecting the needs of various SME owners in Europe. The single market is a work in progress yes, it will strengthen EU’s position in the global competitive markets (developed economies) currently driven by US, China and Asian countries. What I did not read in the analysis though is the current worrying rise of far-right political powers in Europe that share different perspectives on the single market of EU as their priorities seem to be to return to strong national economies and (over)protecting their own borders and internal trade (by setting tariffs for imports for example). These powers await the political result of US elections in 2024 as they will boost their own agendas if Trump gets re-elected. In simple words, EU’s single market is heavily affected by the versatile business norms that take place across EU member countries, national regulatory policies too. EU therefore is moving in the right direction by harmonizing the legal and business environment with the right directives.”
